How to Evaluate a Track Record Before You Allocate

Verification proves the numbers are real. It does not prove they are good. Reading a track record properly is a skill.

A verified track record is the single most useful artefact in evaluating any strategy. But verification only confirms the numbers are real. It does not tell you whether they are good, repeatable, or relevant to you. Reading one properly is a skill, and it is one worth developing before a single dollar is committed.

Start with what cannot be faked

Independent tracking (through services like Myfxbook connected directly to a live broker account) removes the most common deception: screenshots and back-tests. Insist on it; it is the step where most of what gets called a forex scam falls down. If a track record cannot be verified against a live account, treat the figures as marketing, not evidence.

The questions a real allocator asks

  • How long is the record? Months prove little. A track record spanning multiple market regimes is far more meaningful than a strong quarter.
  • How was the return generated? Steady compounding and a single lucky month look identical in a headline figure, and nothing alike in reality.
  • What is the deposit and withdrawal history? Returns calculated on a moving capital base can flatter a strategy. Understand the denominator.
  • Does the risk match the reward? Cross-reference the drawdown. Outsized returns with hidden risk are the trap that catches most people.
“A track record is a set of questions. The skill is knowing which ones to ask of it.”

Relevance is the final filter

Even a genuine, well-built track record may be wrong for you. A high-conviction strategy with deep drawdowns might suit one investor and ruin another’s sleep. The last question is always personal: does this profile fit your tolerance, your horizon, and your goals?

Evaluation means understanding what you are looking at clearly enough to decide for yourself, with confidence. The highest number is not the goal.
